Murry Magic in Bangkok
Indigenous Womens Rugby Union Team
IT was just magic – the Murri Magic Indigenous women's rugby union team from Queensland won the Bangkok International Sevens tournament, running away to a 42-5 win in the grand final. The Bangkok Sevens–held from the 29-31 October – attracted more than 23 countries from Europe, South Africa, the Pacific Islands, Australia and the Middle East to Klong Chan Stadium.
Along the way, the Murri Magic beat Mahasarakham Uni 22-0, Burapha University 35-0, SriNakarin Un iversity 31-5 and Yala Army 27-0 and Bangkok IPE 50-0. In the final meeting Bangkok IPE for the second time, Murri Magic stormed to a 42-5 win.
Registered with another all - Indigenous Sevens team under the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team banner – Murri Magic departed for Bangkok on 27 October, just two weeks after their east coast challenge in the annual Byron Bay Sevens.
The Murri Magic team members are from various communities throughout Queensland and formed last March for their first competition in the annual Ella Sevens at Coffs Harbour. After advancing to the grand final at the Ella Sevens – only to be defeated, the girls saw their potential and were determined to keep their momentum going, thus registering for the Byron Bay and Bangkok events. Murri Magic is sponsored by the Queensland Working Women's Service Inc, The Koori Mail, Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team Inc, and Mailing Productions.
